Flat rate $300 per room, or $40 per hour with a $300 minimum, doors are $50 per door if they’ve never been painted before (3 coats of paint instead of 2) or if it’s 2 days (16+ hours) or more of work then it’s $35 – $30 per hour. Ceilings are extra. If the walls have never been painted then it will need 3 coats of paint but if they’ve been painted in the past then it only needs 2 coats of paint.
I have been providing interior wall painting services on again off again since 2006, originally working for a company providing painting services to commercial spaces before switching to being a freelance independent contractor focused on providing residential painting services. My background is in fine arts so this is a transferable skill (working in multiple disciplines including painting on canvas, body painting, temporary tattoos, makeup, photography etc).
I work with a 2nd painter for big jobs and for jobs that require ceilings to be painted (the 2nd painter is highly experienced & has the upper body strength for working hours on ceilings, I focus on the walls which is what I am good at). I have 3 different highly experienced professional painters I can reach out to for subcontract work when I need a 2nd painter to help me for bigger jobs.
What type of paint do professionals recommend?
For walls, Benjamin Moore. For ceilings, Sherwin Williams.
Set up & What I provide:
I provide paint brushes, roller brushes, long rollers, drop cloths, and painter’s tape. I travel by bike, bus & metro.
I don’t own industrial fans, so I allow paint to dry naturally between coats which has some advantages to the quality of the final paint job. But because I allow paint to dry naturally, if it’s a small job then this means the work is split over 2 days, if it’s a big job then often I am still on location working on painting walls when the first coat of paint has been drying long enough to do the 2nd coat, big jobs are more efficient but may still be needed to be done over several days depending on how big the job is.
Quotes:
For quotes, I am not always able to come on location depending on the timing of when you require a quote but if the timing is good for me then I am happy to come on location to see what you need done free of charge but in the case when I don’t have enough time to come do in person quotes, sending me photographs along with the measurements of the spaces intended to be painted (or a video call can also be helpful) is sufficient for most jobs to be able to provide you with a quote.
Where an in-person consultation becomes relevant and important is when there’s unexpected issues; for example cracks in a wall or weird textures etc. Texture (bad texture) can’t be hidden unless you sand it down, reprime it, and then paint it.
Patch & Paint and Texture Issues
I’m set up and experienced with small patch and paints, I can deal with minor corrections (the largest hole I’ve ever done a repair for, patch and paint, was the size of a fist) but to sand an entire wall head to foot is a lot of work and something that’s better done with an electric sander, which I don’t have but depending on the timing of when you need the work done, I do have access to other painting professionals who have tools I don’t which I can subcontract to come on location to help with prepping big jobs when an electric sander is required (but if painters with electric sanders are not available for your required date then I would have to recommend you to another company).
